The floor is in!

Bwah... what a day - all I can say is the floor is in...

this disaster leads to this - a new floor!

What a pretty shiny new floor.

The day was spent pretty much finishing out cutting and installing the Minicell base floor, the flooring that smooths out all the ribs built into the bare floor - it was kind of like working on a jigsaw puzzle.

cutting out the foam and filling in all those voids was way more tedious then I expected - but I know it pays off because I missed on little spot and could feel it after I installed the plywood subfloor - luckily it was in a spot that was easy to access.

The rest of the subfloor, the XPS foam and the plywood went in fairly smoothly as I had precut the pieces on previous days

For the main floor I used laminate plank flooring - this is my first time installing laminate flooring or any flooring for that matter. I thought it would be pretty straight forward. For the most part it wasn't to bad just really need to make sure the pieces are square when you 'click' them in place. Basically I just did one row at a time starting from driver side working over to passenger. Occasionally I would have trouble getting the whole row to lock in. I would get one end but it would pop the other end out. I think this was generally do to the row not being perfectly squared off. Working around the wheel wells wasn't too bad - the jigsaw came in handy.

Final thoughts about the floor. I basically followed the subfloor plan outlined on the faroutride website. Specifically I used: 0.3 Minicell (only 2 sheets 48"x72" needed), XPS foam 1/2" 3sheets 4'x8', birch plywood 3 sheets 4'x8' and top layer laminate flooring (I used 5 of 6 boxes). The one step from faroutride that I would probably skip next time is the expanding foam - I hate the stuff, it makes a mess and goes everywhere except where you want it to go... That said I am happy with the floor - I still have to do some molding and edge clean up (need to learn how to make clean cuts). I am looking forward to using my new floor and it will be interesting to see how it hold ups and if it squeaks

Tomorrow will hopefully be insulation install day, my carport is kind of a mess and I need to clean it up a little in case any one wants to see the house. After insulation is bed frame and solar! I also have the material for a bike tray so I will squeeze that in there too... till mañana :-)
