With Eva back early from the Yukon and the gray spring clouds turning to sunny warm days it was time to go on summer vacation. The itinerary this year was a trip through Jasper with stops in Banff, Nordegg and Red Deer.

Day 1 - the Bow River

First stop was a bike - paddle along the bow river between Lake Louise and Castle Junction

Packed and ready to go!

Eva looking for the train...

ree

Brian found it!

ree

Time to swap from bike to boat

Is this really a good place to put in???

Successfully on the river!

ree

Now we can relax and enjoy the views

ree

Brian looking for bears

ree

Floating towards Castle mountain...

ree

Castle looming closer - where is Eva???

ree

And just like that another bike - paddle is in the books!

ree

Day 2 - Castle Mountain

Having not seen enough of Castle Mountain the day before we set our objectives on Eisenhower Tower on the south end of Castle Mountain for day 2... The route involves a pretty stiff approach with 1000m elevation gain over a couple of KM's

After a long hike through the woods the trail finally starts to break out of the trees

ree

Brian enjoying a sip of water before the trail turns up!

ree

Leaving the shelter of the trees we venture forth

ree

Without trees the trail becomes exposed

ree

and requires a little bit of a scramble

ree

Eventually the objective is in site

ree

The upper bench looks like a foreign world

ree

with amazing views

ree

Brian gazing into the abyss

ree

and enjoying the view

while Eva enjoys a sunny day in an alpine meadow.,..

ree

But alas the objective was not meant to be... after some careful consideration we decide it's time to head down instead of further up.

ree

and it's still a long way off back to the van...

ree

Day 3 - Banff to Jasper

After a big day in the mountains it was time to transfer from Banff to Jasper and do some sight seeing on the way - Peyto lake lives up to its reputation...

ree

While the Columbia Icefield leaves a little to be desired - Brian wonders where is the ice?

ree

and decides the rock art is more interesting...

ree

a day on the tourist trail wouldn't be complete without a selfie

ree

Day 4 - Dune Wall

Today we opt for a moderate day out climbing under the massive Mount Edith Cavell on quartzite cliffs known as the Dune Wall... Brian all smiles under the mountain

ree

while the approach is short it is mostly up...

ree

Eventually after a little bit of a scramble we near the base

ree

Eva racks up!

ree

changes her shoes

ree

climbs up a corner

ree

and Brian follows

ree

At the top Brian is again all smiles and ready to rap down

ree

a few climbs later and its time to head down - hopefully there are no bears in there!

ree

only a stream stands between us and the end of another successful day of having fun

ree

Day 5 - endless slab climbing

Today's objective is an 11 pitch route up Rainy Day Wall following water runnels up limestone slab. The day starts with a breakfast that includes all the proper food groups - croissants, coffee and Nutella...

ree

After breakfast Eva leads the way up an endless expanse of rock

ree

As usual for the Canadian rockies the views are spectacular

ree

Eva climbing

ree

up...

ree

up...

ree

and up

ree

once at the top its time to go down

ree

down...

ree

and down...

ree

Eva happy to be down

ree

as an added bonus the day is capped off with wild mushrooms!

ree

Day 6 - Cragging

After so many adventures Eva contemplates - what next?

ree

Its decided - a nice simple day of cragging with a short approach is on order!

Brian is happy to be at the cliff without too much effort.

ree

after a couple of days of climbing his shoes are feeling tight

ree

No more slab lets climb cracks...

or perhaps something steeper!

ree

After another day of climbing its time to treat ourselves to some pizza!

After which Brian enjoys an evening stroll through the town of Jasper

ree

Day 7 - Mt Morro

Having not climbed enough - another big day is planned this time up the steep face of Mt Morro. An early start and short approach

ree

Bring us to the base

ree

Again Eva leads the way and Brian follows...

Top of another pitch

ree

Eva stops to ponder what crack to follow

ree

Brian peaks his head over the ledge

ree

Part way up and what a view!

ree

but the climbing doesn't stop

ree

Up the crack Brian goes

ree

Here comes Eva

ree

Brian as always happy to be at the top

ree

and its another adventure finding our way down

ree

Nearing the Van Eva takes in one last look at the view

ree

Day 8 - Nordegg

Today Brian is spent...

ree

We make food...

ree

pick wild strawberries

ree

eat..

ree

and relax...

ree

Day 9 - Red Deer

The trip ends as it begins - with a bike - paddle. Today we go to the town of Red Deer and bike - paddle the Red Deer river

Bike packed with boat and ready to go

ree

another day of peddling

ree

and paddling

ree

Pelicans

ree

and dragonflies

ree

Tired from adventure its time to head home... A week away from the garden and the plants have grown

ree

and that ends our trip to Jasper in the middle of July!
